BEIJING, Sept. 22 (Xinhuanet)-- About 370 million people will travel around the week-long national holiday from Oct. 1 to 7, according to transport ministries here Thursday.
The Ministry of Communications said about 330 million people will travel by roadways, up three percent year-on-year.
The ministry said it had urged local transport departments and companies to ensure a safety transport during the holidays.
It has also set up 70 more observation stations, increasing thenumber of stations to 220, to observe the traffic volume and provide related information to the public on its website.
The Ministry of Railways said travelers will make 38 million journeys by train during the imminent week-long holiday, 3.8 percent more than the same period last year. And Oct. 1 will be a peak day with more than 4.1 million people traveling by railway.
The ministry said it had decided to arrange 82 pairs of temporary direct tourist trains to meet the demand. All local railway departments have been ordered to prepare emergency plans for the travel "golden week.
Since the year 2000, China lengthened its three major public holidays, the Spring Festival, May Day and National Day, from three days to seven days.
This has created so-called "golden weeks," when people can travel across the country and gather with their families.
